Connect VS Code

Add the Link in Seconds MCP server to VS Code agent mode with an mcp.json file.

VS Code's agent mode (GitHub Copilot) can use MCP servers. VS Code can prompt for the key once and store it securely, so it never sits in your files.

  1. Create an API key

    Open Dashboard → API keys, create a key named “VS Code” and copy it.

  2. Add .vscode/mcp.json

    Create this file in your workspace:

    .vscode/mcp.json
    {
      "inputs": [
        {
          "type": "promptString",
          "id": "lis-api-key",
          "description": "Link in Seconds API key",
          "password": true
        }
      ],
      "servers": {
        "linkinseconds": {
          "type": "http",
          "url": "https://linkinseconds.com/api/mcp",
          "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${input:lis-api-key}" }
        }
      }
    }

    For every workspace, run MCP: Open User Configuration from the Command Palette and add the same server there instead.

  3. Start the server

    VS Code shows a Start action above the server in mcp.json. The first time, it asks for your key and remembers it.

  4. Use it in agent mode

    Open Chat, switch to Agent, and ask:

    Text
    Generate a changelog page as HTML and publish it with the linkinseconds tools

Committing the config#

Because the key comes from ${input:lis-api-key}, it is safe to commit .vscode/mcp.json. Each person is asked for their own key.

Tip

Changed or deleted your key? Run MCP: List Servers, restart linkinseconds, and VS Code asks again.
