Custom domains

Open a link, album or site on your own domain, such as docs.yoursite.com, with automatic SSL. A Pro feature.

With a custom domain, a link, album or site opens on an address you own, like docs.yoursite.com, instead of a Link in Seconds address. Visitors see your domain, and the SSL certificate (the padlock) is set up for you. Custom domains are a Pro feature, and you can connect up to 5 of them.

Before you start#

  • A Pro or Lifetime plan. On Free, the Custom domains page shows an Upgrade to Pro button instead of the form. See Pricing.
  • A domain you own, and access to its DNS settings at your registrar or DNS provider.
  • At least one link, album or site to point it at.

Connect a domain#

  1. Open Custom domains

Click Custom domains in the dashboard sidebar. Or, from a link, open Link settings, go to the Sharing tab and click Set up custom domain. That way the link is already picked for you.

  2. Enter your domain

Type it in the Your domain field, for example docs.yoursite.com.

  3. Pick what it opens

Under Opens this link / album / site, choose the target. You can only pick things you own. If you have many, a search box appears.

  4. Click Connect domain

Your domain appears under Your domains with a Pending DNS badge and the DNS record to add.

The counter at the top of the form shows how many of your 5 domains are in use. You can't use a Link in Seconds or vercel.app address, or a domain that is already connected.

Add the DNS record#

Go to the place where you manage your domain's DNS and add the record shown on the page. Each value has a copy button so you can paste it exactly. Which record you need depends on the address:

Your domainTypeNameValue
docs.yoursite.comCNAMEdocscname.vercel-dns.com
yoursite.comA@76.76.21.21

A subdomain (like docs.yoursite.com) uses a CNAME record whose name is the part before your domain. A root domain (like yoursite.com) uses an A record. Always copy the record from the page, since it is made for the exact domain you entered.

Use a subdomain if you can

A subdomain like files.yoursite.com leaves your main website untouched. Pointing your root domain here means the root opens your link instead of your website.

Check status and go live#

DNS changes usually take a few minutes, sometimes longer. When you've added the record, click Check status on the domain:

  • "Your domain is live." The badge changes to Live and the domain opens your link.
  • "DNS not detected yet, give it a few minutes." The record isn't visible yet. Wait and try again.
  • "Couldn't check the domain right now." Our check failed, not your DNS. Try again in a moment.

SSL is automatic. Once the domain points here, the certificate is set up for you, so the address works with https://. There is nothing to buy or upload.

How it behaves#

A custom domain is another way into the same link. Password, expiry date, view limit and the other link settings work the same on your domain.

The domain is bound to the link, album or site itself. If you later change the link's name with Custom link, your domain keeps opening it.

Replace the file any time

Replace the file behind the link and your domain opens the new version. See Replace a file and keep the link.

Disconnect a domain#

Click Disconnect on the domain and confirm. The domain stops opening your link, and its slot is freed. You can then remove the DNS record at your registrar. If the disconnect can't finish, you see an error and the domain stays listed, so try again in a moment.

Want to point it somewhere else?

There is no edit button for the target. Disconnect the domain, then connect it again and pick the new link, album or site.
