How to get a shareable link for a file from ChatGPT

Share the file ChatGPT made, not the chat

ChatGPT can't host a file at a public link by itself. Its Share button links to the conversation, and files it creates (a PDF, a spreadsheet, a chart) are downloads inside the chat. To get a link to the file itself, download it and upload it to a file host, or add the Link in Seconds plugin to ChatGPT so it uploads the file for you and replies with the link.

What does ChatGPT's Share button actually share?

Open the chat, click Share at the top right, and copy the link. According to OpenAI's help center, the link is a snapshot of the conversation at the time you share it, anyone with the link can open it on a personal account, and it gives no access to your account. You can update or delete it later from the same Share dialog or under Settings, Data controls, Shared links.

That works well when you want someone to read the conversation. It is less good when you want to send the file: the recipient lands on a chat page, not on the PDF or the spreadsheet. On a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, OpenAI says shared links only open for members of the same workspace, so a client outside it can't see them. And there is no view count, password or expiry date on the link.

The simplest route works with any ChatGPT plan and any file type we support: PDF, Word, Excel, images, video, CSV, Markdown and single HTML pages.

  1. 1

Download the file from the chat

Click the file ChatGPT made (or find it in your Library) and save it to your computer or phone. Do it soon after it's made: ChatGPT's own help pages say generated files can expire quickly.
  2. 2

Open it once on your device

Check that the PDF, spreadsheet, image or HTML page opens and looks right. What you see is what your recipient will see.
  3. 3

Upload it to Link in Seconds

Sign in with a free account (Google or an email code, no card) and drop the file into the uploader. Free accounts take files up to 250 MB each.
  4. 4

Copy the link and send it

You get a short link and a QR code. The person you send it to opens it in any browser with no account.
  5. 5

Add controls if you need them

In Link settings you can add a password, an expiry date, a view limit or view-only mode, and the link's analytics show who opened it. All free.
Made a web page? If ChatGPT built you an HTML file, it opens as the live page, not as code. For safety, HTML uploads unlock 6 hours after you create your account; PDFs, images and other files work right away. More in share an HTML file as a link.

Yes, if you add Link in Seconds to ChatGPT. It connects as a plugin (a remote MCP server) and you sign in once with your Link in Seconds account through OAuth, so there is no API key to copy. After that, type @ in a chat, pick Link in Seconds, and ask for a link. ChatGPT calls our upload_file tool and replies with the public link in the chat.

  • A file you attach: upload_file accepts a ChatGPT attachment and fetches it straight from the chat, up to 100 MB. Your plan's per-file limit still applies.
  • Something ChatGPT writes: text, Markdown, CSV or a one-page HTML file can be published directly as content, up to 3 MB. Try “Build this as a one-page HTML file and publish it as a link.”
  • Anything bigger: upload it on the website, then ask ChatGPT how the link is doing.

The plugin can also list your links and read their analytics (views, visitors, countries, devices), so “Did anyone open my proposal link?” gets a real answer. It can't delete links, change link settings or touch billing; passwords and expiry dates are set in the dashboard. Every file is type-checked and scanned exactly as on the website.

Whether you can add a custom MCP server depends on your ChatGPT plan and, on a work account, your workspace admin. The full setup, with the exact menu and form fields, is in the ChatGPT plugin guide.

Common cases

A report or spreadsheet for a client

Send the file link, not the chat. The client sees the document, not your prompts, and the link's analytics tell you when they opened it. If the numbers change, replace the file and the link stays the same. See how to see who opened a shared file.

A quick page or handout made in the chat

With the plugin added, ask ChatGPT to write it as HTML or Markdown and publish it. You get the link without leaving the conversation.

You use Claude too

The same server works in Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code with an API key. That setup is covered in let Claude publish files as links, and Claude artifacts have their own guide: share a Claude artifact as a link.

Quick answers

Can ChatGPT give me a public link to a file?

Not on its own. ChatGPT's Share button makes a link to the conversation, and files it creates are downloads inside the chat. To get a link to the file itself, download it and upload it to a file host such as Link in Seconds, or add the Link in Seconds plugin to ChatGPT so it uploads the file and replies with the link.

How do I share a file ChatGPT made?

Download it from the chat, then upload it to Link in Seconds with a free account. You get a short link that opens the file in any browser, plus a QR code, a view count and optional password or expiry.

Does a shared ChatGPT conversation include the file?

OpenAI's help page says a shared conversation can include supported images and uploaded files, as a snapshot of the chat. The person sees the file inside the conversation, not as a file link of its own, and you get no view count, password or expiry on it.

Can ChatGPT upload a file and send me the link?

Yes, with the Link in Seconds plugin. Add it once as a custom MCP server, sign in with your Link in Seconds account (OAuth, no API key), then ask ChatGPT to turn a file into a link. Attached files up to 100 MB are fetched straight from the chat, and your plan's per-file limit still applies.

Is it free?

Yes. The plugin and every link feature, including passwords, expiry and analytics, are free on every plan. A free account takes files up to 250 MB each, and links never expire.
