How to share a PDF on Instagram (bio link, story link and DMs)
Instagram won't take a PDF. A link will.
Instagram can't post a PDF: posts, stories and DMs take photos and videos, not documents. The way around it is to turn the PDF into a link and put that link where Instagram allows one, which is your bio, a story's Link sticker and direct messages. Link in Seconds does the first part for free: upload the PDF and you get a link that opens it on any phone. If you want the pages in the feed itself, convert them to images instead.

Why can't you share a PDF on Instagram directly?
Instagram is built around images and video. Its help centre lists what you can send in a direct message (photos and videos, posts, profiles, text, hashtags and locations) and documents are not on the list. Posts and stories are the same. So any route to a PDF on Instagram is either a link to the PDF or the PDF turned into pictures.
How to share a PDF on Instagram as a link
- 1
Turn the PDF into a link
Upload the PDF to Link in Seconds with a free account (Google or an email code, no card). Files up to 250 MB work on Free. You get a short lisview.com link that opens the PDF in the browser, with no download and no account for the reader. - 2
Give it a clear name and preview
In Link settings, set a custom link name like lisview.com/spring-menu and a share preview title, so the link reads well when people see it in your bio or a chat. - 3
Put it in your bio
In Instagram, go to your profile, tap Edit profile and paste the link into the website or links field. Then say "menu in bio" or "guide in bio" in your posts. - 4
Add it to a story with the Link sticker
Create a story, open the sticker tray, tap Link and paste the URL. You can change the sticker's text to something like "Read the guide". - 5
Send it in DMs
Paste the link into a direct message. It is text, so it works even in a message request to someone who doesn't follow you yet.
Bio link, story link or DM: which should you use?
| Where | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Bio link | Something that stays: a menu, price list, media kit, guide | Only people who visit your profile see it |
| Story Link sticker | Launches and announcements, with a call to action | Stories disappear, and new accounts may not have the sticker |
| Direct message | One person who asked: a quote, a brochure, a contract | One chat at a time |
| Page images in a post | Showing a few key pages in the feed | Small text is hard to read; no clickable links |
Will people be able to read it on their phone?
This is the part most guides skip. People tap Instagram links on a phone, and in our own numbers 64% of shared files were opened on a phone. A link that forces a download, or asks the reader to sign in to a cloud drive first, loses a lot of them at that step.
A Link in Seconds PDF link opens the document straight in the page: the reader taps, the PDF is there, they scroll and zoom. No app to install and no account to view. A few tips make it read better on a small screen:
- Keep the file light. A huge scanned PDF is slow on mobile data. See how to reduce PDF file size.
- Put the important page first. Readers on a phone decide fast.
- Use big type. A portrait page with large headings reads better than a wide landscape spread.
Should you add a QR code?
A QR code isn't tappable inside Instagram, so it won't help in a post. It is useful everywhere around Instagram: a poster, a table card, a flyer at an event, the last slide of a talk. Every Link in Seconds link comes with a QR code that opens the same PDF as your bio link, and scans are counted separately in the analytics, so you can see which got more people reading. More in turn a PDF into a QR code.
Can you post the PDF pages as images instead?
Yes, and for a short PDF it can be the better choice. Convert each page to a JPG with our free PDF to JPG tool, which runs in your browser so the file isn't uploaded, then post the pages as a carousel. It works well for a one-page flyer, an infographic or a few slides.
It works badly for long or text-heavy documents. Small print is hard to read once a page is shrunk to a feed image, and any links inside the PDF stop working. A common pattern is both: post two or three key pages as images, and put the full PDF in your bio for anyone who wants the rest.
Do you need to know who opened it?
Each link's analytics show views, time spent, scroll depth and device, free on every plan. If the PDF is a lead magnet, turn on the email gate so readers enter their email before it opens. And if it is a draft or for clients only, add a password. Everything is in how to turn a PDF into a link.
Quick answers
Can you post a PDF on Instagram?
No. Instagram posts, stories and direct messages take photos and videos, not documents. To share a PDF, either upload it somewhere that gives you a link and put that link in your bio, a story Link sticker or a DM, or convert the pages to images and post them.
How do I put a PDF link in my Instagram bio?
Upload the PDF to a link host such as Link in Seconds, copy the link, then on Instagram go to your profile, tap Edit profile and paste it into the website or links field. Anyone who taps it opens the PDF in their browser.
How do I add a PDF to an Instagram story?
Turn the PDF into a link first, then add the story's Link sticker: open the sticker tray, tap Link, paste the URL and place it on the story. Instagram says new accounts, and accounts that repeatedly break its Community Guidelines, may not have the Link sticker.
Can I send a PDF in an Instagram DM?
Not as a file. Instagram direct messages take photos, videos, posts and text. Send the PDF as a link instead. A message request to someone who doesn't follow you can only contain text until they accept, and a link counts as text.
Will the PDF be readable on a phone?
It will if it opens in the browser rather than downloading. In our own data, 64% of shared files were opened on a phone. A Link in Seconds PDF link renders the pages right in the page so readers can scroll and zoom without an app.
Can I see how many people opened my PDF from Instagram?
With a Link in Seconds link, yes. The link's analytics show views, time spent, how far readers scrolled and their device, on every plan including Free. Some apps send no referrer, so those opens can show as Direct rather than naming Instagram.
