A QR code you can update after printing

If you want a Hovercode alternative for a PDF or video QR code that never expires and that you can update, use a QR code that points at a file link instead of at the file. Hovercode's free PDF tool makes a static code for PDFs up to 2 MB: it keeps opening the file you uploaded and can't be changed. On Link in Seconds every uploaded file, up to 250 MB on the free plan, gets a link with its own QR code; you can replace the file behind it, scans are counted, and the link never expires.

What does Hovercode do well?

Hovercode is a dedicated QR code platform and a good one. If the QR code itself is the product, it is the stronger tool:

  • Design. Custom styling for codes that sit on branded packaging, posters and menus. Our QR codes are plain: dark squares on white, a 512 by 512 pixel PNG.
  • Dynamic codes for any web address. Point a code at a website and change the destination later. Our updatable codes point at files you upload, not at any URL.
  • Scan tracking across many codes. Built for teams who run QR campaigns and manage lots of codes in one place.

Where it gets tight is the file itself. A free PDF code is static and small, and a free account comes with only a few dynamic codes. Check Hovercode's pricing page for the current numbers.

Why a static PDF QR code becomes a problem

A static code opens one fixed thing forever. That's fine until the PDF changes: a new price on a menu, a corrected date on a flyer, next season's catalogue. Then you either reprint every code or leave an old file in circulation. The fix is a code that points at an address you control, so the file behind it can change while the printed code stays the same.

Every file gets one

Upload a PDF, video, image or other supported file and its link comes with a QR code. Open the link's menu in My files, choose QR code and download the PNG. Nothing extra to set up.

Replace the file, keep the code

The code points at your link, not at the file. Replace the file and every printed code opens the new version, and the view count carries on. More in update a PDF without changing the link.

Scans are counted

The address inside the code ends in ?s=qr, so analytics show QR scans apart from direct clicks, alongside views, time spent, how far people read a PDF and their device.

Video works too

A video opens and plays in the browser with seeking, which is what you want behind a poster or a product box. See QR code for video.

Pick the link name before you print. The code contains the link's name. If you later rename the link with Custom link, printed codes stop working. Replacing the file is safe; renaming the link is not.

What do you give up?

  • Design. No colours, logos or frames on the code. If the code has to match a brand, Hovercode is better.
  • Codes for any URL. Our editable codes are for files. For a plain web address, our free QR code generator makes a static code that can't be changed or tracked.
  • Limits. 50 live links and 500 MB of storage on the free plan; Pro raises the per-file limit to 500 MB.
  • An account to upload. You sign in with Google or an emailed code. People who scan need no account.

Which should you use?

  1. A branded code for a website address: Hovercode.
  2. A code for a PDF or video you may need to change: a file link with its QR code. Start with turn a PDF into a QR code.
  3. A restaurant or cafe menu: see PDF menu QR code.

Quick answers

Does Hovercode's free PDF QR code expire?

Hovercode says its free static codes keep working. The catch is that a static PDF code opens the exact file you uploaded and can't be changed. To swap the PDF behind a printed code you need one of Hovercode's dynamic codes, or a link you can update.

What is the file size limit for Hovercode's PDF QR code?

Hovercode's free PDF to QR tool takes PDFs up to 2 MB without an account. With a free Hovercode account the limit goes up to 10 MB, per hovercode.com as checked in October 2026.

How many dynamic QR codes does Hovercode give for free?

A few. Hovercode's own pages don't all give the same number, so check its pricing page for the current count. Its free plan also lets you make static codes.

Can I make a QR code for a video that I can change later?

Yes. Upload the video to Link in Seconds and use the QR code that comes with its link. Files up to 250 MB work on the free plan. Replace the video later and the same printed code plays the new one.

Are QR scans tracked on Link in Seconds?

Yes, on every plan. The address inside each link's QR code ends in ?s=qr, so the link's analytics show QR scans apart from people who clicked the link directly, next to views, time spent and devices.
