DocSend vs Papermark: tracked document sharing, compared

DocSend and Papermark both send a deck or contract as a link and show how it was read, page by page, with data rooms for bigger deals. They differ on price model, free plan and openness. Here is an honest side-by-side, and a simpler third option if you only need to know a document was opened.

Should you use DocSend or Papermark?

Pick DocSend if you want an established, Dropbox-owned product for fundraising and sales, and a paid plan after the trial is fine. Pick Papermark if you want a free plan with page-by-page analytics, open-source code you can self-host, or data rooms at a published price. If you only need one link that tells you when a document was opened, without a data room, a simpler link tool is enough.

DocSend: the established choice

Owned by Dropbox. Page-by-page analytics, email verification, passcodes, expiry, data rooms and one-click NDAs. It starts with a free trial; after that it is a paid product.

Compare with DocSend

Papermark: open source, with a free plan

Page-by-page analytics on every plan, including a free one with 50 documents and 50 links. Data rooms, NDAs and dynamic watermarks start on its Data Rooms plan. The code is open and can be self-hosted.

Compare with Papermark

A third option: just the tracked link

Link in Seconds turns a PDF into one link that opens in any browser and tells you when it was opened. Time per page, email gate, password and expiry are free on every plan. No data room, no NDA.

Know if your PDF was opened

Before you choose

Prices change. Papermark's prices below were checked on 21 Oct 2026, and DocSend does not show prices we could verify, so check both pricing pages before you decide.

Data rooms and NDAs are the real dividing line. If a deal needs a permissioned folder, an audit trail or a signed NDA before viewing, use DocSend or Papermark. Link in Seconds has none of those.

Viewer matching is lighter here. Link in Seconds groups visits by a hashed IP unless you turn on the email gate, so two people on one office network can look like one viewer.

How it works

  1. 1

    Name what you need

A data room or NDA? DocSend or Papermark. Self-hosting? Papermark. Just to know it was opened? A tracked link.

  2. 2

    Check the price model

Compare what a team plan costs against how many documents you really send each month.

  3. 3

    Send and follow up

Share the link, watch for the first open, and follow up while the document is fresh in their mind.

What is DocSend best at?

DocSend is best at tracked sharing for teams that live on decks and proposals. It is owned by Dropbox and has been the default name in this space for years. You upload a document, send a link, and see who opened it, how long they spent on each page and where they dropped off. Access controls include email verification, passcodes and expiry dates. Around that sit virtual data rooms and one-click NDAs for fundraising and deals. New users start with a free trial, then move to a paid plan; check DocSend's own pricing page for current prices, since we could not verify them.

What is Papermark best at?

Papermark is best when you want DocSend-style tracking with a free plan and open code. Its Free plan, checked on 21 Oct 2026, covers 50 documents and 50 links for one member, with page-by-page analytics included on every plan. Pro is €29/month, or €24/month billed yearly. A custom domain starts on Business at €79/month (€59 yearly). Data rooms, NDA agreements and dynamic watermarks start on the Data Rooms plan at €149/month (€99 yearly). Papermark says it is open source and can be self-hosted, which matters if documents must stay on your own servers.

How do their access controls compare?

Both gate a document well; the difference is mostly which plan you need. DocSend lists email verification, passcodes, expiry and one-click NDAs as product features. Papermark puts NDA agreements and dynamic watermarks on its Data Rooms plan and above. On both, view-only and watermarks discourage copying but cannot stop a screenshot. Link in Seconds covers the everyday set, free on every plan: password, email gate, expiry date, view limit, view-only mode and a watermark on PDF previews. It has no NDA step and no data room.

Do you need either of them?

Often not, if the question is only "did they open it?". Most tracked documents are small jobs: a proposal, a quote, a resume, a first deck to a few investors. Link in Seconds turns the PDF into one clean link that opens in any browser with no account, counts every open, and can email you the moment it is read. Every plan includes time per page, device and country, an email gate, a password, an expiry date and replace-the-file-keep-the-link. The free plan keeps 50 live links up to 250 MB each; Pro is $9/month or $49/year, or $99 once for Lifetime. When a deal moves to diligence, a data room from DocSend or Papermark is the right next step.

Which one should you pick?

Pick by the size of the job. Plenty of founders use a plain tracked link for the first cold email and a data room once diligence starts.

  • Pick DocSend if your team already runs on it or on Dropbox, you want the established name for fundraising and sales, and a paid plan is fine.
  • Pick Papermark if you want page-by-page analytics for free, open-source code you can self-host, or data rooms and NDAs at a published price.
  • Pick Link in Seconds if you send one document at a time, just need a link that tells you when it was opened, and do not need a data room or an NDA step.
