## How do I share a Word document as a link?

To share a Word document as a link, upload the .docx file above, sign in with Google for free, and copy the short link you get. Anyone who opens it reads the document as pages in their browser, with its headings, tables and images, without Word, an app or an account. The link never expires unless you set a date.

### Pages, not a raw download

The DOCX is drawn page by page in the browser from the file's own structure: headings, fonts, tables, inline pictures and the page breaks you set. Nothing is imported into another editor first, so the layout is not reflowed on the way. The reader scrolls it like a printout on a phone or a laptop.

### See when it was opened

Every link counts its opens, with device and country, on every plan. Send a proposal or a contract for review and you know whether it was read before you follow up. It counts visits, not names; add the free email gate if you need to know who.

### Fix a typo, keep the link

Found a mistake after sending? Replace the file from your dashboard and the same link shows the corrected version. Nobody keeps reading the old draft from their inbox, and you never send a second attachment called final-v2.

### What a Word link will not do

It is not a shared editor. Readers see a read-only copy of the file you uploaded; nobody can type into it, and there is no co-editing or suggestion mode.

Old .doc files are not previewed. Word 97 to 2003 documents can be shared, but they show a download card; open them in Word or LibreOffice and save as .docx to get the page view.

Comments, tracked changes and some Word extras may not show. Text boxes, SmartArt and embedded charts can render partly; accept changes and remove comments first, or share a PDF for a pixel-exact layout.

## How it works

- 1 ### Save the final version as .docx Accept or reject tracked changes and delete comments the reader should not see. If the file is an old .doc, use Save As and pick Word Document (.docx) so it previews as pages.

- 2 ### Upload it and sign in free Drop the file on the upload card and sign in with Google, one tap and no card. Free covers documents up to 250 MB, Pro up to 500 MB, so even image-heavy reports fit.

- 3 ### Copy the link and send it Paste it into an email, WhatsApp or Slack, or download the QR code for print. Add a password, an expiry date or view-only from the link's settings whenever you need them.

## Opens in any browser, no Word needed

A Word attachment depends on what the other person has installed. A phone may show a stripped preview, a Chromebook pushes it into Google Docs, and a Mac without Office opens it in Pages with different spacing. A link removes that guesswork. The reader taps it and the document appears as pages in Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox, with no Microsoft account, no Office license and nothing to install. If the document uses a font their device lacks, the browser swaps in a close match, so line breaks can shift slightly.

## A view-only copy, not an editable file

Cloud drives share the live file. With OneDrive or Google Drive, what the reader can do depends on the permission you pick, and a wrong click can hand out edit rights. Google Docs' Publish to web needs the file converted into a Google Doc first. A Word link here is simpler: it is a read-only copy of the exact .docx you uploaded. Readers can scroll and follow the hyperlinks, but cannot change a word. If you want them to have the file too, leave downloads on and the menu offers the original DOCX.

## Password, expiry and tracking for sensitive documents

Contracts, CVs, HR letters and internal reports carry names, numbers and addresses. Every plan lets you add a password before you share the link, set an expiry date so it stops working after a deal or a hiring round, and switch it to view-only so the download option disappears. The email gate asks readers for their address before the document opens, and the analytics show each open with device and country. One honest caveat: view-only cannot stop a screenshot, so treat it as friction, not copy protection.

## Update the document, keep the same link

A Word link is a snapshot of the file you uploaded, not a live sync with your copy on disk or in OneDrive. Editing your local document does not change what readers see. To publish a new version, open the link in your dashboard and replace the file: the URL, the QR code and the view history all stay the same, and everyone who already has the link sees the update on their next visit. Every plan also keeps the last 5 versions, so you can restore an earlier draft if the new one was a mistake.

## Readable on a phone

Most links sent in WhatsApp, Slack or a text get opened on a phone first. The viewer runs edge to edge on a small screen, pages scroll vertically, and a fullscreen button gives the document the whole display. There is no Word app to download and no prompt to sign in to Microsoft. You can also upload from your phone: open this page in its browser, pick the .docx from Files or your email download, and copy the link when it finishes.

## A QR code for print and noticeboards

Every link comes with a downloadable QR code. Put it on a printed handout, a noticeboard, a flyer or the back of a business card, and anyone with a phone camera opens the full document in a second. House rules, a course handout, an event programme or a policy that changes each term are good fits: because the code points at the link and not at the file, replacing the DOCX updates what every printed code shows, without reprinting.

## Embed the document on a web page

To show the document inside your own site, intranet or help center, open the link's settings, go to the Sharing tab and copy the code under Embed on your site. It is an iframe that shows the same page viewer without our header, so a policy, a menu or a terms page sits in place on your page. The password, expiry and view-only settings still apply inside the embed, views from it are counted, and replacing the file updates every page it is embedded on.
