Older .doc files from Word 2003 and earlier aren't previewed, so save those as .docx first. - 2 ### It is laid out as pages We read the document's own structure and draw it page by page on a light grey background, like a printout, including tables, inline pictures and the page breaks you set. - 3 ### Send it to be read or signed off Share the short link with a client, a hiring manager or a landlord. Hyperlinks inside the document still work and open in a new tab. ## Page layout, not a reflowed import Uploading a Word file to Google Docs converts it, and tables, spacing and images often move. The browser view keeps the structure of the DOCX: page breaks where you put them, tables with their rows, pictures where you placed them. ## Styles and headings as you wrote them Headings, bold and italic text, numbered and bulleted lists and table borders come from the document's own styles, so a contract still reads like a contract and a CV like a CV. ## Safer than an email attachment Attachments get forwarded, saved and edited. A link can have downloads switched off, a password or an expiry date, and you see each time it is opened. Links inside the document open in a new tab, and unsafe link types are removed. ## Fix a typo without resending Spotted a mistake after sending? Replace the file in your dashboard and the same link shows the corrected document, so nobody keeps reading the old draft from their inbox. ## What can look different from Word Fonts follow the reader's device If the document uses a font the reader doesn't have, the browser substitutes a similar one and line breaks can shift slightly. For pixel-exact layouts such as a designed brochure, export a PDF and share that instead. Advanced Word features Comments, tracked changes, text boxes, SmartArt and embedded charts may render partially or not at all. Accept or reject changes and remove comments before uploading if the reader should see a clean version. Legacy .doc files The old binary .doc format can be shared, but it shows as a download card rather than a preview. Google Docs converts Word files into its own format, and things like section breaks, table widths and image wrapping don't always survive. Text on screen can still be read or screenshotted, so treat it as a deterrent, not copy protection.
