Upload speed (Mbps)

Upload speed is often much lower than download, check the upload number on a speed test.

Download speed (Mbps)

Upload time

About 3 min 51 sec to 4 min 12 sec

At 20 Mbps. Best case with no overhead: 3 min 30 sec.

Download time

About 46 seconds to 50 seconds

At 100 Mbps. Best case with no overhead: 42 seconds.

Estimate only. The range adds 10 to 20% for protocol overhead and Wi-Fi. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Upload time is file size in bits divided by your upload speed. Multiply the size in megabytes by 8 to get megabits, divide by your Mbps, then add about 10 to 20% for protocol overhead. A 500 MB file on a 20 Mbps upload takes about 3.5 minutes in theory and roughly 4 minutes in practice.

## How to estimate an upload in three steps

- 1 ### Find the file size Right-click the file and open Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac) to see its size, then type it in with the right unit: KB, MB or GB.

- 2 ### Test your upload speed, not just download Run any speed test and note the upload number in Mbps. That is the one that limits how fast a file leaves your device. Pick a preset if you only know your plan speed.

- 3 ### Read the range The calculator shows a best case with no overhead and a realistic range with 10 to 20% added. If the result is hours, try a wired connection or a quieter time of day.

## Megabits vs megabytes: the 8x trap

Internet speeds are sold in megabits per second (Mbps, small b). File sizes are measured in megabytes (MB, big B). One byte is 8 bits, so a 100 Mbps connection moves at most about 12 megabytes per second, not 100. Most surprise at slow uploads comes from reading Mbps as MB/s. This calculator does the conversion for you, and counts file sizes the way Windows and this site do: 1 MB is 1,024 KB and 1 GB is 1,024 MB.

## Why real transfers are slower than the math

Every file travels in packets wrapped in TCP/IP, TLS encryption and HTTP framing, and some packets are resent. Together that usually costs somewhere around 10 to 20% of your line speed. That figure is an estimate, not a constant: it depends on the server, the distance and how busy your network is. The best case shown is the theoretical floor; the range is what to plan around.

## Wi-Fi vs cable

A wired Ethernet connection usually gets close to the speed you pay for. Wi-Fi often does not: walls, distance from the router, neighbouring networks and other devices on the same network can cut real throughput well below the plan speed. For a big upload, plug in a cable or sit near the router, and pause cloud backups and streaming on other devices while it runs.

## Upload once, share a link

If you are sending the same large file to several people, upload it one time and send a link instead of attaching it again and again. On Link in Seconds a free file can be up to 250 MB, and the people you share it with stream or download it in the browser without an account.

## Frequently asked questions

At 10 Mbps upload, about 16 to 17 minutes; at 50 Mbps about 3 minutes; at 100 Mbps under 2 minutes. Those include a 10 to 20% allowance for protocol overhead, so treat them as estimates.

Most home cable and DSL plans are asymmetric: upload is often a fifth or a tenth of the download speed. Fibre is often symmetric. Run a speed test and use its upload figure for uploads.

Mbps is megabits per second, the unit internet plans use. MB/s is megabytes per second, the unit file sizes use. One byte is 8 bits, so 100 Mbps moves at most about 12 MB of data per second.

No. You type a size and a speed, and the math runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and no account is needed.
