## Should you use DocSend or Google Drive?

Pick DocSend when you need to know how outside readers engage with a document, page by page, and you will pay per user for it: fundraising decks, sales collateral, data rooms. Pick Google Drive when the job is storing files and collaborating on them, and sharing is occasional. If you only want to send one document as a clean link and know whether it was opened, a lighter link tool does that without a seat licence.

### DocSend: depth of tracking

DocSend shows who opened a document and how long they spent on each page, and adds data rooms and NDA gating. There is no free plan; new users get a trial, then a per-user subscription.

### Google Drive: storage and teamwork

Drive gives every Google account free storage, folders, sync and live co-editing in Docs and Sheets. Sharing works, but external viewers are mostly invisible to you, and a restricted link sends them to a request-access screen.

### A third option: a tracked link

Link in Seconds turns a PDF or deck into one clean link that opens in the browser with no sign-in, shows when it was opened, and takes a password, view-only mode or an expiry date on any plan. It starts free.

### Before you choose

Prices change. DocSend's plans and Google's storage tiers are revised from time to time, so check their current pricing before you decide.

Per-page analytics are DocSend's edge. A lighter link tool tells you a document was opened and when, not which slide held a reader's attention.

Co-editing is Drive's edge. If people need to work on the document together, keep it in Drive and share the finished version separately.

## How it works

- 1 ### Name the question Which page did they read? DocSend. Can we edit it together? Drive. Did they open it? A tracked link.

- 2 ### Think about the reader Outside readers open faster with no email gate and no permission step, so add those only when you need them.

- 3 ### Send and follow up Share the link, watch for the first open, and follow up while the document is fresh in their mind.

## What DocSend is built for

DocSend, owned by Dropbox, is a document-sharing tool for people whose job depends on how a document is read. You upload a deck or a contract, send a link, and see who opened it and how long each page held their attention. Around that sit virtual data rooms, NDA click-through before a document opens, and team content management. It commonly asks the viewer for an email first, which is how it ties an open to a person. It no longer has a free plan: new users get a trial, then pay per user per month.

## What Google Drive is built for

Google Drive is cloud storage first. Every Google account gets free storage shared across Gmail, Photos and Drive, with paid tiers for more. It shines at folders you browse, files that sync across devices, and live co-editing with comments in Docs, Sheets and Slides. Sharing outside your account is where it gets clumsy: a link left restricted shows the recipient a request-access screen, and you see very little about who opened a file unless you are on a Workspace plan, and even then anonymous outside viewers stay invisible.

## Access and control

Both let you decide who can open a document, in different ways. DocSend controls access per link, with options such as requiring an email, a passcode, an expiry or an NDA. Drive controls access per person or per domain, which is precise inside an organisation and slow for outsiders, since each one may need to be added or approve a request. If your recipients are outside your company and you just want the document to open, neither model is ideal: one adds a gate, the other adds a permission step.

## A lighter third option

Most documents people want tracked are small jobs: a proposal, an invoice, a resume, a one-off deck. Link in Seconds turns the PDF into one clean link that opens in the browser with no account for the reader, records every open with a view counter, and on any plan adds device and country breakdowns, a password, view-only mode, an expiry date and an optional email gate. Replace the file and the same link serves the new version. It does not do per-page analytics, data rooms or co-editing, so DocSend and Drive still win those jobs.

## Which one should you pick?

Running a fundraise, a sales pipeline or a due-diligence process where per-page engagement matters: DocSend. Storing files, working on them with your team, sharing mostly inside your organisation: Google Drive. Sending one finished document to people outside your company and wanting to know whether and when they opened it, without a per-user subscription: a tracked link from Link in Seconds. Many people combine them: Drive for drafts, a link for the final version they send.
