Formulas stay intact

.xlsx → one live link

budget.xlsx Live

You finish the numbers, attach the `.xlsx`, and [hit send](https://linkinseconds.com/send-large-files-via-email). A week later there are five copies in five inboxes, two of them renamed _final_ and _final-v2_, and someone is editing the one from Tuesday. Email is a copy machine: every send forks the file, and nobody can tell which fork is the real one. A link fixes that at the root. You upload the workbook once and share one address. There is a single file at a single URL, and everyone opens that.

## What actually happens when you share an Excel file as a link

On [Link in Seconds](https://linkinseconds.com/share-files-online) you upload the `.xlsx` (or export a Google Sheet to `.xlsx` first) and get back a clean public URL. Anyone who opens it sees two things:

- **A read-only preview in the browser.** For `.xlsx` and `.xls`, the page renders the sheet as a plain table, one tab per sheet, so a recipient can read the numbers without Excel and without an account.

- **A download of the real workbook.** The file they save is the exact file you uploaded, so it opens in Excel or Google Sheets with every formula, chart, and pivot intact.

Two honest limits on the preview. It shows the first 1,000 rows and 60 columns of each sheet, so a very large model is trimmed on screen (the full file still downloads complete). And it is a snapshot of the computed values, [not a live editor](https://linkinseconds.com/view-only-file-sharing): nobody recalculates or edits in the browser. If they need to change something, they download and open it in a real spreadsheet app.

The preview is for reading, the download is for working. If a colleague just needs to see this quarter's totals, the browser table is enough. If they need to build on your model, they download the workbook and the formulas are all there.

## The version-chaos fix: replace the file, keep the link

Try it while you are reading

Upload a file and get a clean, trackable link with a QR code. Free, and no account for whoever opens it.

[Create a link](https://linkinseconds.com/)

This is the part email cannot do. On any plan you can [replace the file while the link stays the same](https://linkinseconds.com/pricing). Upload a corrected workbook and the URL does not change: the person who bookmarked it, the deck that embeds it, the Slack message that pasted it, all now resolve to the new version. There is no “ignore my last email, use this one” because there is only ever one file at one address.

Two habits make this reliable:

- **Give the link a custom name.** A slug like `/q3-budget` reads as canonical, which keeps people coming back to the same address instead of forwarding a copy.

- **Replace, do not re-upload.** Uploading again mints a new link and reintroduces the exact problem. Replacing in place is what keeps the one URL true.

## When a PDF is the better share

The live workbook is right when people need the model: the formulas, the tabs, the ability to edit their own copy. But sometimes you only want them to _read_ a clean, fixed layout, and then a PDF export beats the raw spreadsheet:

- **You want it to look exactly as designed.** Print-area layout, conditional formatting, and charts render pixel-for-pixel in a PDF, with none of the row-and-column trimming the sheet preview applies.

- **You do not want it edited or re-saved.** A PDF is a document, not a template. It signals “this is the final report,” not “here is a model to fork.”

- **You want a full-fidelity in-browser view.** PDFs preview inline on every device with no size trimming, so a big, formatted report reads perfectly on a phone.

[Export the sheet to PDF](https://linkinseconds.com/pdf-to-link-converter) from Excel (File, Export, or Print to PDF) or Google Sheets (File, Download, PDF), then upload that instead. Same clean link, same view analytics, but now it is a document people read rather than a workbook they open.

| If you want people to… | Share this |

| Use the model, edit their own copy, keep formulas | The .xlsx workbook |

| Read a fixed, print-perfect report | A PDF export |

| See totals fast without opening Excel | Either, the .xlsx has a table preview |

| Never let it be edited or re-saved | A PDF export |

## Controls worth knowing

Every link carries **view analytics**, so you can see how many times the sheet was opened instead of guessing whether anyone read it. On the free plan you get 250 MB per file and up to 50 links, which covers most one-off shares, plus every control that matters for a working document:

- **Password and expiry** for anything with real numbers in it, so the link is not open to whoever it gets forwarded to.

- **View-only** turns off the download entirely, leaving just the read-only table for people who should see the figures but not keep a copy.

- **Notify on open** emails you the moment someone views it, useful when you have sent a proposal and are waiting to hear back.

- **Custom name and advanced analytics** to keep the URL canonical and see the opens over time.

## Why this beats an email attachment

- **No size bounces.** A workbook with images or lots of tabs can blow past the ~25 MB most email providers accept. A link has no attachment to bounce.

- **No renamed copies.** One address, one file. Replace it in place and the address still points at the truth.

- **No account for the recipient.** They open the link, read the table or download the workbook, done. Nobody has to log in to anything.

## Quick answers

### Will my formulas still work?

Yes. The file people download is the exact .xlsx you uploaded, byte for byte, so every formula, named range, and pivot opens live in Excel or Google Sheets. The in-browser preview is read-only and shows computed values as a table, but downloading gives back the real, editable workbook.

### Can people view it without downloading?

Yes, for .xlsx and .xls. The link opens a read-only table of the sheet in the browser, one tab per sheet, no account and no Excel needed. It shows the first 1,000 rows and 60 columns of each sheet; anything larger, or the fully interactive workbook, comes from the download.

### Can I update the sheet without resending the link?

Yes, on every plan. Replace the file and keep the same link: the URL stays identical while everyone who opens it now gets the new version. That is the fix for the 'which copy is final?' problem, because there is only ever one copy at one address.

### Is it private?

The link is unlisted and not indexed by search engines, so only people you send it to can find it. On every plan you can add a password, set an expiry date, turn off downloads for view-only access, and get notified when someone opens it.
