# How to share a PDF people can view but not download

Share a view-only PDF, no download

report.pdf Live

lisview.com/view-only

There's a real difference between sharing a document so someone can **read** it and sharing it so someone can **keep** it. A signed contract, an invoice, a file a client paid for. You want them to have their own copy. But a draft you're still working on, a pitch deck you're showing around, a priced quote, or a sample chapter of your book. Those you want people to look at, not save, forward, or repost.

The problem is that most ways of [sharing a PDF online](https://linkinseconds.com/share-files-online) hand over a copy by default. Email it and it's downloaded the moment it arrives. Drop it in a Drive folder and there's a download button one click away. A view-only link changes the default: the document opens **in the browser**, and the obvious ways to save it are gone. Here's how it works on [Link in Seconds](https://linkinseconds.com/), and (just as important) what it can and cannot actually stop.

## Read vs. keep: two different jobs

Before you reach for view-only, be honest about which job you have. If the person on the other end genuinely needs the file (to sign it, print it, file it, or work from it), a view-only link just annoys them, and they'll ask you to send it properly anyway. View-only is for the cases where _looking_ is the whole point:

- **A draft or work-in-progress** you want feedback on, but don't want an old version floating around after you've moved on.

- **A pitch deck or portfolio sample** you're showing to people you haven't fully vetted yet.

- **A priced quote or proposal** that you don't want copied, edited, or forwarded with your numbers on it.

- **A sample chapter, worksheet, or preview** where the free peek is meant to sell the full thing, not replace it.

## How view-only works on Link in Seconds

Try it while you are reading

Upload a file and get a clean, trackable link with a QR code. Free, and no account for whoever opens it.

[Create a link](https://linkinseconds.com/)

You upload the PDF the same way you would any other file, and you get a clean public link like **lisview.com/your-name** that opens right in the browser. If you just want the basics, our [PDF to link converter](https://linkinseconds.com/pdf-to-link-converter) covers the plain version of this. The difference here is one setting: turn on **view-only mode** for that link.

When view-only is on, the link:

- Shows the PDF rendered in the browser, so people can read every page.

- Hides the download button that normally sits on the page.

- Hides the direct file link, so there's no raw URL to the PDF to copy and pass around.

The result is that the document is there to be read, but there's no one-click way to pull down a copy. View-only is available on the [free plan](https://linkinseconds.com/pricing) too, you don't have to upgrade just to turn off downloads. Every link also comes with a view counter and a [QR code](https://linkinseconds.com/qr-code-generator), the link never expires, and you can replace the file later while keeping the same URL. If you want the deeper walkthrough, we wrote a dedicated guide on [sharing a PDF without download](https://linkinseconds.com/view-only-file-sharing) and a full overview of [view-only file sharing](https://linkinseconds.com/view-only-file-sharing).

## The honest truth about view-only

Here's the part most tools quietly skip. View-only makes it _harder_ to save a file. It does not make it impossible. It removes the easy path and deters casual saving and idle forwarding, which for a lot of everyday sharing is exactly enough. But it is not a lock, and you should not treat it like one.

**Anything a browser can display, a person can capture.** View-only hides the download button and the file link, but it cannot stop screenshots, screen recording, a phone camera pointed at the screen, or a determined person with a little technical patience. If a page can be seen, it can be copied. Plan around that, don't pretend it away.

To be completely clear about what Link in Seconds does _not_ do: there is no DRM, no encryption of the rendered page and no screenshot-blocking. There is an optional watermark that stamps the viewer's email (or "Confidential") and the date across the PDF preview, which makes a leaked screenshot traceable but does not prevent it. View-only is a friction and etiquette layer, not a security guarantee. Anyone promising a public link that truly can't be copied is overselling it.

So what do you actually do when the content matters? Layer up, and lower your exposure:

- ⚠️ View-only alone won't protect genuinely sensitive material, treat it as a deterrent, not a safe.

- Add a **password** (free on every plan) so only people you gave the code to can even open the page.

- Add an **expiry date** (free on every plan) so the link stops working after your window closes, instead of living forever.

- Only share with people you actually trust to respect "please don't save this."

- If it truly can't leak (legal, medical, financial, unreleased), don't put it on a public link at all. Use a channel built for that.

## Good uses vs. wrong uses

The trick is matching view-only to jobs where "harder to save" is genuinely useful and "can't be captured" isn't required.

### Good uses for view-only

- Sharing a draft for comments without seeding stale copies everywhere.

- Showing a pitch deck or design concept to prospects and partners.

- Sending a priced quote you'd rather wasn't forwarded around a company.

- Offering a free sample chapter or preview that points to the paid version.

- Letting someone read a policy, menu, or handout on their phone with a QR code.

### Wrong uses for view-only

- Anything the recipient legitimately needs a copy of: contracts to sign, invoices, deliverables they paid for.

- Truly confidential files where a single leak is a real problem. That's a password-plus-expiry situation at minimum, or not a public link at all.

- Content you believe view-only makes uncopyable. It doesn't, and building on that assumption will burn you.

## The bottom line

Use view-only when your goal is to let people read a PDF without handing them a copy to keep, forward, or repost. It kills the one-click download and the raw file link, which stops the casual saving that causes most of the trouble. For anything more sensitive, stack a password and an expiry on top, share it only with people you trust, and remember the one rule that never changes: if a browser can show it, someone can capture it. Set your expectations there, and view-only becomes a genuinely useful tool instead of a false sense of security.
