# How to password-protect a file you share by link

Password-protect a file you share

private.pdf Live

lisview.com/private

You just uploaded a contract, a pricing sheet, a [pitch deck](https://linkinseconds.com/pdf-to-link-converter), or a private document and got a clean link back. It opens in any browser, which is exactly what makes a link so useful. It is also what makes it a little scary. Anyone who has the URL can open the file, and links have a way of leaving your hands.

This is a guide to putting a password on a file you share by link with [Link in Seconds](https://linkinseconds.com/). You will see how to turn it on, what to pair it with, and, just as important, the honest limits of what a link password can and cannot do. The limits matter, because knowing them is the difference between real caution and false confidence.

## The problem with a plain public link

A normal share link has no idea who is on the other end. It does not check a login, it does not ask a question, it just serves the file to whoever loads the address. For a [menu or a flyer](https://linkinseconds.com/image-to-link) that is perfect. For a signed contract or an unreleased deck, it is a quiet risk.

Links spread in ways you did not plan for:

- You email the link to one person. They forward the thread to a colleague, who forwards it again. The file goes everywhere the email goes.

- You paste it into a group chat or a shared doc. Now everyone with access to that space has access to your file.

- Someone is CC'd who you did not mean to loop in, and the link rides along in the reply-all.

- The URL ends up in browser history, a screenshot, or a link preview, long after you meant it to be seen.

None of this requires anyone to be malicious. A public link simply does what it is told. A password gives the link a reason to stop and ask a question first.

## How to password-protect a link on Link in Seconds

Try it while you are reading

Upload a file and get a clean, trackable link with a QR code. Free, and no account for whoever opens it.

[Create a link](https://linkinseconds.com/)

Password protection is **free on every plan**. The free plan lets you [share files online](https://linkinseconds.com/share-files-online) with a clean link, a view counter and a QR code, plus the password lock, expiry dates, custom link names and view analytics.

- Upload your file the usual way and get your link, for example lisview.com/your-name.

- Open the link's settings and turn on password protection.

- Type the password you want viewers to enter. Save.

That is it. Now anyone who opens the link sees a prompt asking for the password before the file is shown. Type the right one, and the file opens. Get it wrong, and the file stays sealed.

Your password is stored **hashed**, as a scrambled, one-way version. It is never saved in readable form and it is never shown back to you, not even in your own dashboard. That means if you forget it, no one can look it up for you; you just set a new one on the link. Write it down somewhere safe when you create it.

## Pair the password with tighter controls

A password is one lever. Every plan has a few more, and together they give you real control over how a file behaves after you send it.

### Add an expiry date

Set the link to stop working after a date you choose. A password keeps out people without the secret; an expiry date makes sure the link goes cold even for the people who had it. For a bid, an offer, or anything time-boxed, this pairing is the point.

### Turn on view-only

View-only mode hides the download button and the direct file link, so viewers read the file in the browser instead of keeping a copy. It pairs naturally with a password when you want a specific person to _see_ a document without walking away with the file. If you are sharing a PDF this way, the deeper walkthrough is in [share a PDF without download](https://linkinseconds.com/view-only-file-sharing). The same password setting works on a clip too, see [share a video with a password](https://linkinseconds.com/share-video-with-password), and on every other file type, see [password protected file sharing](https://linkinseconds.com/password-protected-file-sharing).

### Watch the view analytics

Every link has a view counter with device and country breakdowns. A password does not tell you who opened the file, but the analytics tell you _whether_ and roughly from where it was opened. If you see views from a country you did not send it to, that is a signal to reset the password and re-share.

## The honest limits: what a link password can and can't do

This is the part most tools skip, so read it carefully. A link password is a real, useful lock, but it is not encryption, DRM, or a vault. It is a gate at the front of the link.

What a password genuinely does:

- Stops the casual and accidental case: a forwarded thread, a leaked URL, a wrong CC.

- Adds a real step. Someone who finds the link but not the password cannot open the file, full stop.

- Buys you time. If a link gets out, you change the password and the old one is dead.

What a password does not do:

- ⚠️ It cannot protect a file from someone you already gave it to. Once a person opens the file and downloads or screenshots it, that copy is theirs and the password no longer applies to it.

- It is not encryption of the file itself. Treat it as a lock on the door, not a safe around the contents.

- It cannot un-send. If the wrong person already opened it, the password protects future visits, not the past one.

The single most common mistake defeats the whole point: **never put the password in the same email as the link.** If both sit in one message, anyone who receives or forwards that message has both. When you [send the link by email](https://linkinseconds.com/send-large-files-via-email), share the password another way, over a text, a call, or a separate chat. Two channels means a single leaked message is not enough to open the file.

## When a password is enough, and when it isn't

A link password fits some jobs well and is the wrong tool for others.

A password is usually enough when:

- You are sending a proposal, deck, or draft to a known person and just want casual eyes off it.

- The file is sensitive-ish, not classified: internal pricing, a work-in-progress, a private portfolio.

- You can share the password over a separate channel and rotate it if the link spreads.

A password is not enough when:

- The document is legally or financially high-stakes and a copy leaking would be a serious problem.

- You need a guarantee that the file is encrypted at rest or that recipients cannot retain a copy.

- You are handling regulated data with real compliance requirements, which calls for a system built for it.

For the vast middle ground of everyday sharing, though, a password plus an expiry date plus view-only covers you well, and it takes about thirty seconds to set up. Compare the plans on the [pricing page](https://linkinseconds.com/pricing). Password protection, expiry, custom names, and analytics are free on every plan; you only pay for more links or storage.

Share the link with confidence, share the password separately, and rotate it if anything looks off. That habit, more than any single feature, is what keeps the right file in the right hands.
