Transfer, sharing or hosting?

lisview.com/transfer-vs-hosting

File transfer sends a copy of a file to someone once, through a link that usually expires within days. File sharing gives people ongoing access to a file you keep in your own storage, with permissions you control. File hosting puts a file at a stable public address that opens in any browser for as long as you want. Pick transfer for a big one-off delivery, sharing for collaborating on your own files, and hosting for a link many people will open over time.

## What does each one actually mean?

### File transfer: a delivery

You upload a file, the service gives you a download link or emails it to the recipient, and after a short time the file is deleted. It is the courier model. WeTransfer is the best-known example: its free plan allows 3 GB in total over 30 days, and each transfer stays available for 3 days. The strengths are size and simplicity. The weakness is that the link dies, so a recipient who opens it next week gets nothing.

### File sharing: access to your own files

Your files live in a cloud drive such as Google Drive or Dropbox, and you invite people or turn on a link. The file stays yours and stays in place. That is ideal for working on documents with colleagues. It is less ideal for strangers: links open the drive's own interface, and a wrong sharing setting leaves the visitor stuck on an access request. Storage is shared with everything else you keep there; a free Google account, for example, has 15 GB split across Drive, Gmail and Photos.

### File hosting: a public address for a file

A host stores the file and gives it a clean link that opens straight in the browser, with no app or account for the viewer. The link is meant to last, so it works on a printed QR code or in an email signature. Good hosts add controls: a password, an expiry date if you want one, and a count of who opened it. Link in Seconds is a file host.

Transfer vs sharing vs hosting, in general terms.

## Which one do you need?

A huge file, sent once

File transfer

Multi-gigabyte raw footage or a project archive that only needs to arrive once.

Working on files together

File sharing

Colleagues editing the same documents, with folder permissions and version history.

One link, many readers, over time

File hosting Recommended

A resume, menu, brochure or portfolio that should open on any device for months.

Knowing a client opened it

File hosting with analytics

Proposals, invoices and pitch decks where the open is the signal you are waiting for.

- **Is the file bigger than a few hundred megabytes?** Use a transfer service, or a device-to-device send if you are both online.

- **Will people need it next month?** Avoid transfer links that expire; use a host or your drive.

- **Are the readers outside your company?** A host avoids access requests and drive interfaces.

- **Will you print the link?** Use a host where you can replace the file and keep the same link, so the QR code never goes stale.

## Where does Link in Seconds fit?

It is file hosting. You sign up with a free account (no card), upload a file and get a short link that opens in the browser for anyone, with no account to view. Links never expire on any plan unless you set an expiry date. Every link control is free on every plan: password, expiry, view limit, view-only, email gate, QR code and analytics. You can replace the file and keep the same link.

**Where it is not the right tool:** files are capped at 250 MB each on Free and 500 MB on paid plans. For multi-gigabyte deliveries, WeTransfer or Filemail are the better fit. For editing documents with a team, use a cloud drive.

## Quick answers

### What is the difference between file transfer and file sharing?

File transfer delivers a copy of a file to someone, usually once, through a link that expires after a few days. File sharing gives people access to a file you keep, usually in your cloud storage, with permissions you can change. Transfer is a delivery; sharing is ongoing access.

### What is file hosting?

File hosting keeps a file online at a stable public address so anyone with the link can open it in the browser, any time. It suits files you send to many people or print as a QR code, like a resume, a menu or a brochure.

### Is Google Drive file sharing or file hosting?

It is cloud storage with sharing built in. Links work for as long as the file stays in your Drive, but they open Drive's own viewer and visitors can hit an access request if the sharing setting is wrong. A dedicated host gives a cleaner public link.

### Is WeTransfer file transfer or file hosting?

File transfer. It is built to deliver big files once. WeTransfer's free plan, for example, allows 3 GB in total over 30 days and keeps each transfer for 3 days, after which the link stops working.

### Which is best for sending a large video?

For a one-off multi-gigabyte file, a transfer service is the better fit. If the video is under 250 MB and you want a link that keeps working with view counts, a file host like Link in Seconds fits better.
