# Dropbox link temporarily disabled? The traffic limits by plan, and how to share without them

Link disabled

20 GB/day on Basic

lisview.com/launch-video

You open your Dropbox link, or a client tells you it's broken, and instead of the file there is a notice that the link has been _temporarily disabled_ because it generated too much traffic. Nothing was deleted and nobody hacked you. Your account went over Dropbox's daily limit for shared links, and Dropbox paused them.

Here is what the limits are on each plan, how quickly you can hit them, how long a ban lasts, what to do right now, and how to share a file that a lot of people will open without it happening again. Dropbox figures are from its own help center as listed in October 2026.

The short answer

Cause

Your shared links went over the account's daily traffic limit

Dropbox Basic (free)

20 GB and 100,000 downloads a day

Plus to Business

1 TB a day

Advanced, Business Plus, Enterprise

4 TB a day

How long

Temporary; about a day the first time, per Dropbox staff

Buy more bandwidth?

No, only a bigger plan

## Dropbox's shared-link traffic limits, by plan

Dropbox counts the size of every file downloaded through your shared links, across the whole account, every day. Its help center lists three tiers:

Daily shared-link traffic allowance

Dropbox Basic (free)

20 GB a day

Plus, Family, Professional, Essentials, Standard, Business

1 TB a day

Advanced, Business Plus, Enterprise

4 TB a day

Link in Seconds (every plan)

no daily cap

Dropbox limits from its help center, October 2026. Basic also caps downloads at 100,000 a day.

Dropbox says the limits exist to prevent abuse, and it names the usual triggers: a link passed along to a lot of people, a file downloaded over and over, or a file request that receives a large volume of uploads.

## How fast you can hit 20 GB on the free plan

Try it while you are reading

Upload a file and get a clean, trackable link with a QR code. Free, and no account for whoever opens it.

[Create a link](https://linkinseconds.com/)

20 GB sounds like a lot until you multiply. The allowance is file size times downloads, so a bigger file burns through it much faster:

| What you shared | Downloads to reach 20 GB in a day |

| A 5 MB PDF | about 4,000 downloads |

| A 50 MB slide deck | about 400 downloads |

| A 200 MB video | about 100 downloads |

| A 1 GB game mod or dataset | about 20 downloads |

Arithmetic on Dropbox Basic's published 20 GB daily limit, rounded.

A 200 MB video posted in one busy group chat or forum thread can do it before lunch. And because the limit is per account, not per file, going over it can pause _every_ shared link on the account, including the proposal you sent a client last week.

## What to do right now

- **Wait it out.** Bans are temporary and links come back on their own. Dropbox staff have said in its community forum that a first ban lasts a day and that repeated bans can last longer.

- **Send the urgent files another way.** If a client is waiting, don't sit on a disabled link. Upload the one file they need somewhere else and send that link instead.

- **Find the file that caused it.** It is usually one large, public link that got shared beyond the people you sent it to. Unshare it or move it before the ban lifts, or it will trip again.

- **Don't plan on buying bandwidth.** Dropbox staff have said extra bandwidth isn't sold on its own; the only lever is a higher plan, and a viral file can beat 1 TB too.

**Why this keeps happening:** Dropbox is a sync service. Shared links are a side door into your storage, so Dropbox meters them hard to keep the side door from becoming a free download server. A file that many people will open belongs on a host that expects that.

## How to share a popular file without a traffic limit

Link in Seconds is built for exactly the link Dropbox is worried about: one file, opened by lots of people. There is no daily traffic cap and no bandwidth meter, on any plan, free included, so a link that suddenly gets passed around keeps serving.

- **One file can't take down the rest.** Each link stands on its own. A popular video doesn't pause the contract you sent yesterday.

- **It opens in the browser.** PDFs page through, videos stream with seeking and images show full size, with no Dropbox preview page and no "sign in to Dropbox" pop-up in front of the reader. See [how to turn a video into a link](https://linkinseconds.com/blog/how-to-turn-a-video-into-a-link).

- **You see it coming.** Every link shows views, unique visitors, time spent, device and city, free, so you know when a file is taking off instead of learning about it from a disabled-link page.

- **You stay in control.** Add a password, an expiry date or a view limit, turn downloads off, or replace the file behind the same link. All free.

What you give up is size: a free file can be up to 250 MB, and 500 MB on Pro. For a 30 GB archive, Dropbox or a transfer service is still the better home. There is also a per-visitor rate limit that stops one scraper from hammering a link, which an ordinary reader never comes near. For the PDFs, decks, clips and images people actually pass around, compare the [Dropbox alternative](https://linkinseconds.com/dropbox-alternative) page.

Dropbox limits are quoted from its help-center page on interrupted sharing activity, checked October 2026. The ban length and the bandwidth answer are from Dropbox staff replies in its community forum. Confirm on Dropbox's own pages before you rely on a number.

## Quick answers

### Why is my Dropbox link temporarily disabled?

Because it went over Dropbox's daily traffic limit for shared links. Dropbox counts the size of every download against your account's daily allowance: 20 GB and 100,000 downloads a day on Dropbox Basic, 1 TB on Plus, Family, Professional, Essentials, Standard and Business, and 4 TB on Advanced, Business Plus and Enterprise. Go over it and Dropbox pauses your shared links.

### How long is a Dropbox link banned for?

It is temporary. Dropbox staff have said in its community forum that the first ban lasts one day and that links are restored automatically when it expires; repeated bans can last longer. Dropbox doesn't publish a fixed schedule.

### Does the Dropbox ban affect all my links or just one?

The traffic limit is set per account, so going over it can pause every shared link and file request on that account, not only the file that got popular. That is why one viral file can break the links you sent to clients.

### Can I buy more Dropbox bandwidth?

Dropbox has said it doesn't sell extra bandwidth on its own. The way to a higher limit is a higher plan: 1 TB a day from Plus upward, 4 TB on Advanced and Enterprise.

### What is a good way to share a popular file without traffic limits?

Use a host built for public links rather than a sync service. Link in Seconds links have no daily traffic cap and no bandwidth meter on any plan, open in the browser instead of downloading, and show how many people opened them.
