Dropbox link won't open? Here's why

lisview.com/dropbox-fix

A Dropbox link that won't open or preview is usually one of five things: the file is too big or the wrong type for Dropbox's preview, the link expired or was disabled, the link ends in the wrong `dl=` setting, it's an HTML file (which Dropbox shows as code, never as a page), or the recipient was asked to sign in because you shared to their email instead of sending a link. Each has a quick fix below.

The short answer

No preview, only Download

File over Dropbox's preview limit for its type

"Link disabled"

Account went over the daily traffic limit

Downloads instead of opening

Link ends in dl=1

HTML shows as code

Dropbox links never render HTML

Asks them to sign in

Shared to an email, not sent as a link

## Why won't the file preview?

Dropbox previews each file type only up to a size limit. Over that limit, or for a type it doesn't support, the recipient sees the file name and a download button instead of the content. Dropbox's help center lists, among others:

| File type | Largest file Dropbox previews |

| PDF | 500 MB |

| Word and RTF | 160 MB |

| PowerPoint and Keynote (most formats) | 288 MB |

| Spreadsheets (most formats) | 40 MB |

| ZIP archives | 512 MB |

| Plain text and code | 8 MB |

| Encrypted or password-protected files | Never previewed |

Dropbox preview limits from help.dropbox.com, checked October 2026.

Two less obvious rules: Dropbox says previews are generated on the _owner's_ plan, so upgrading the viewer changes nothing, and some formats show only the first page. **Fix:** export to a lighter format (a PDF instead of a 300 MB deck), compress the file, or tell the recipient to download it.

## Did the link expire or get disabled?

[Create a link](https://linkinseconds.com/)

On paid plans such as Professional, Essentials, Standard, Advanced, Business and Enterprise, you can give a link an expiry date. Dropbox says it stops working at 11:59 pm on that day, in your time zone. A link also dies when you delete the file, move it out of the shared folder, or delete the link in your shared-links list.

If the page instead says the link was _temporarily disabled_, that's different: your account went over its daily shared-link traffic allowance, and Dropbox paused every link on it. Limits per plan and what to do are in [Dropbox link temporarily disabled](https://linkinseconds.com/blog/dropbox-link-temporarily-disabled).

**Fix:** open the link's settings, check the expiry date, password and download switch, then copy a fresh link. If you turned off downloads, Dropbox notes it only stops downloads through Dropbox, so it isn't a lock.

## dl=0, dl=1 or raw=1: which one did you send?

Look at the end of your Dropbox link. The parameter changes what the browser does:

| Link ends in | What happens |

| dl=0 (the default) | Opens Dropbox's preview page with a download button |

| dl=1 | Forces the browser to download the file |

| raw=1 | Skips the preview page and lets the browser show the file directly, via a redirect |

Dropbox link parameters as documented on help.dropbox.com, checked October 2026.

A link that "just downloads" on a phone usually has `dl=1`. A website or app that can't embed your image usually needs `raw=1` and has to follow redirects. Dropbox advises editing the existing parameter rather than adding a second one. More on how this works in [what a direct download link really is](https://linkinseconds.com/blog/direct-download-link).

## Why does my HTML file show code instead of the page?

Dropbox's help center is plain about it: shared links don't render HTML content in a web browser. That's a security choice, not a bug, and no link parameter changes it. A landing page, an AI-made mock-up or an exported report in HTML will show as text, or download.

**Fix:** host the page somewhere built to run HTML. See [how to share an HTML file as a live link](https://linkinseconds.com/blog/share-an-html-file-as-a-link).

## Why is it asking them to sign in to Dropbox?

Dropbox says anyone can open a shared link without an account. The sign-in wall appears when you _shared the file with their email address_, which ties access to a Dropbox account, or when a team admin set links to open only for team members or invited people.

**Fix:** use **Copy link** and send the link itself, with access set to anyone with the link. On a team account, ask the admin whether outside links are allowed.

## The quick checklist

- Open the link in a private window, signed out of Dropbox.

- Check the file's size and type against the preview table.

- Check the end of the link: dl=0 to preview, dl=1 to download.

- Open the link settings: expiry, password, downloads, who can open it.

- If it is HTML, move it to a host that renders HTML.

**Why this happens:** Dropbox is a sync service first. Shared links are a window into your storage, so they preview what's cheap and safe to preview and send everything else to a download button.

## Or use a link that doesn't do this

If the point of the link is that someone _looks at_ the file, a host built for viewing avoids most of the above. On Link in Seconds you upload with a free account (no card), and your recipient needs no account to view.

- **Every link previews.** PDFs open in a page viewer, videos stream with seeking, images show full size, Word and Excel files show in the browser, up to 250 MB per file on Free.

- **HTML runs as a page.** An HTML file opens as a live page in a sandbox. New accounts can upload HTML 6 hours after signing up, for safety.

- **No dl= tricks.** The link opens the file; the viewer can download it unless you make it view-only, which is a deterrent rather than DRM.

- **Controls are free.** Password, expiry date, view limit and analytics work on every plan, and links never expire unless you set a date.

Where Dropbox is genuinely better: syncing folders and sharing very large files. Our per-file cap is much smaller. For everyday documents and media, compare the [Dropbox alternative](https://linkinseconds.com/dropbox-alternative) page.

Dropbox limits and behavior are from Dropbox's own help center, checked October 2026. Dropbox updates these pages, so confirm a number there before you rely on it.

## Quick answers

### Why won't my Dropbox link preview?

Dropbox only previews certain file types, each up to a size limit, and it never previews encrypted files. Above the limit the recipient only gets a download button. Dropbox also says previews are based on the file owner's plan, not the viewer's.

### What is the difference between dl=0 and dl=1 on a Dropbox link?

A normal Dropbox link ends in dl=0 and opens a preview page. Changing it to dl=1 makes the browser download the file instead. Dropbox also documents raw=1, which skips the preview page and lets the browser render the file directly, through a redirect.

### Why does my HTML file show as code in Dropbox?

Dropbox's help center says shared links don't render HTML content in a web browser. A Dropbox link can't serve an HTML page as a working website, so you need a host that runs HTML pages, such as Link in Seconds, which shows an HTML file as a live page in a sandbox.

### Do people need a Dropbox account to open my link?

Not for a shared link. Dropbox says anyone can open and download from a link without an account. If you shared the file with their email address instead, or your team limits links to team members, they will be asked to sign in.

### Why did my Dropbox link stop working?

Either the link reached the expiry date you set, the file was moved out of the shared folder or deleted, the link was turned off, or your account went over the shared-link traffic limit and Dropbox paused your links temporarily.
