You get an email for transfers you sent by email, and a downloaded status in your list of transfers. It does not tell you if someone opened the transfer page and left, how long they looked, or, on a plain link, who it was. Here is exactly what WeTransfer reports, how to get names, and how to see opens rather than just downloads. ## What WeTransfer shows you after sending - **A download email.** When you send by email, WeTransfer emails you once the recipient downloads the files. If you sent to several people, you hear about each. - **A downloaded status.** Your transfers list shows whether each transfer has been downloaded. - **Nothing for a preview.** If the recipient opens the page, previews an image and closes the tab, WeTransfer counts nothing. [Create a link](https://linkinseconds.com/) The way you send decides what you can learn. ### Sent by email WeTransfer knows who each recipient is, so a download can be matched to an address. This is the setting to use if you need to know that a specific person got the files. ### Sent as a link Anyone holding the link can download, and WeTransfer has no idea who they are. You can learn that the files were downloaded, but not by whom, and a link forwarded to a colleague looks the same as the original recipient. ## How to see who downloaded a WeTransfer - Before sending, turn on download tracking (WeTransfer calls it tracked downloads or access control). - Add the recipients' email addresses. - Each recipient verifies their email address before they can download. - Your transfer then lists which verified recipients downloaded the files. It has to be on _before_ you send; you cannot add it to a transfer that has already gone out. WeTransfer's own pages were not consistent about which plans include it when we checked in October 2026, so look at your plan's feature list before you rely on it. **A download is not a read.** Someone can download a pitch deck, never open it, and still show as "downloaded". Someone else can read every page in the preview and show as nothing. Link in Seconds features are free on every plan. ## Seeing opens, not just downloads With [Link in Seconds](https://linkinseconds.com/) you upload the file once and send a link that opens it in the browser. Every open is counted, whether or not anything is downloaded, and the link's analytics show: - Views and unique visitors, with the time of each open. - Time actually spent (the clock pauses when the tab is hidden). - How far they got: pages reached in a PDF, percent watched in a video. - Device, browser, city and country, and whether they came back. - Downloads, separately, if you leave downloading on. Turn on **notify on view** to get an email when the link is opened, and an **email gate** if you need to know who: the viewer enters an email before the file opens, which also works when the link is forwarded. That is deliberate: we do not set cookies or store IP addresses. - WeTransfer carries bigger files. For a multi-gigabyte hand-over where all you need is "did it arrive?", its download email is enough. ## Which to use - **You need proof the files were collected:** a WeTransfer sent by email, with tracked downloads if you need names. - **You need to know it was read:** a view-tracked link. Yes, for transfers sent by email. WeTransfer emails you when the files are downloaded, and your transfers list shows whether a transfer has been downloaded. It tells you about downloads only: if someone previews the files without downloading, that does not register. ### Can I see who downloaded my WeTransfer? Only if you set it up before sending. WeTransfer's tracked downloads ask each recipient to verify their email address before downloading, which is how it ties a download to a person. A plain link transfer cannot tell you who downloaded it, only that it happened. Check your plan, because WeTransfer's own pages differ on which plans include it. ### Does WeTransfer notify you when a link transfer is downloaded? Link transfers are anonymous by design: anyone with the link can download, so WeTransfer can only report that a download happened, not who did it. If you need names, send by email or turn on tracked downloads before you send. ### Does the recipient know I can see the download? Not explicitly. A plain WeTransfer download page does not tell the recipient that you get a download notification. With tracked downloads they will notice, because they have to verify their email first. ### How can I see if someone opened a file without downloading it? Share a link that opens the file in the browser and counts views, not just downloads.
